This book helps you recognize the different styles of communication and how to connect with others.
There are 6 basic universal emotions:
- Happiness
- Sadness
- Fear
- Anger
- Surprise
- Disgust
Being in tune with others’ emotions and mimicking these emotions can affect the outcome. Things you can do to assist:
- Adjust your attitude
- Straighten your posture
- Smile
- Make eye contact
- Raise your eyebrows and chin
- Shake hands
- Lean slightly
The book also goes into listening to understand not to respond. I admit that I listen to respond too often. Especially when in arguments with others, it is often difficult to separate yourself away from wanting to respond. But someone who is angry with you just wants to be heard. They don’t want to hear your excuses. Let them be hear. Let them know you heard and understand. You don’t have to agree or beat yourself up.
Three Question Strategy for Conflict Resolution:
- I can tell this is important to you, what is it that you want me to understand?
- Is there anything else?
- Is that everything?
